As a
professional educational consultant, concentrating exclusively on residential
placements for challenging youth and young adults, I have spent the last twelve
years traveling throughout the country as well as into parts of Canada, Mexico
and Europe. I have probably visited in excess of 600 facilities and the more I
visit, the less I use. It is not that there aren’t good programs, but good
programs do not necessarily mean a good fit for your child. It is my job to
think outside the box when necessary and to evaluate your personal situation
individually. As a parent of two children myself, I realize how challenging
struggling teens can be and how critical that placement for your child needs to
be.
As your educational consultant, I will guide you to options that you may not
have considered and be there to support you through the emotional journey on
which you are about to embark. This is not just a child placement, this is a
placement for the whole family system. From coaching you on questions to ask
programs, monitoring your child’s progress, advocating for your child with the
programs should problems arise and occasionally getting some scholarship, you
need not feel that you are walking this path alone. Some say that the cost is
too high. Only you can decide if doing nothing is more expensive than getting
the help that your child needs.
The variety of therapeutic options for families
include:
- Pre-adolescent programs
- “Emotional growth” schools
- Structured/therapeutic boarding schools
- Wilderness/ranch programs
- Residential treatment centers
- Assessment facilities
- Psychiatric hospitals
- Transitional living programs
- Options for 18+ year old students
- Therapeutic in home coaching programs
My mantra has become that there is no shame in
having a child who struggles; the shame is when nothing is done about it.
